As anyone who watched South Park Season 18 Episode 10 knows, the famously envelope-pushing series "went there" in a big way last night.
The episode - which centered around the Cartman-curated "Washington Redskins Go F-ck Yourself Holiday Special" - featured the usual topical ribaldry, and plenty of moments that were meant to shock.
A hologram Michael Jackson dancing with young children, a hologram Kurt Cobain crooning to a shotgun, and a cameo from a Swedish gaming vlogger all had us cringe-laughing and wondering what the hell we were watching at various times,
At the end of the day, of course, it was just the usual mix of randomness and irreverence that we've come to expect from the insanely long-running series.
There was one scene that seemed specially designed to elicit "too soon!" reactions, but judging by the response on Twitter, showrunners Matt Stone and Trey Parker have been subjected to minimal hate.
As you may have heard, Bill Cosby sexual assault accusations have dominated celebrity news headlines in recent weeks, meaning that it was only a matter of time before Comedy Central's man-child geniuses sank their teeth into the scandal:
The combination of a predatory Cosby, America's sweetheart Swift, and the perennially problematic "Baby, It's Cold Outside" should have outraged the Internet - as basically everything does these days - yet somehow Parker and Stone remain untouchable, and they proved once again that just like one of their favorite targets, they're a couple of smooth criminals.
Yes, even with a running tweet-crawl anticipating a rabid response from indignant social justice warriors, Parker and Stone wound up being hailed for their laudable ability to make us laugh at some of the headlines that cause us the most pain.
On a related note: jokes at the expense of racist police officers were overwhelmingly well-received, proving that sometimes the Internet's outrage finds a deserving target.
