We all knew it was coming, right?
It was really just a matter of time.
Of course Taylor Swift was going to write a break-up anthem. Of course she was going to call out an ex-boyfriend from this year.
It's just what she does.
But the solo artist has now done it in unusual fashion.
On Tuesday morning, country group Little Big Town revealed in a Facebook Live press conference that their new song, "Better Man,” was actually penned by Swift, with Karen Fairchild telling fans:
"She sent us this song, and it was one that was really special to her.
"And she thought of us because of the harmonies, and she's never pitched a song to anyone before and the moment that we heard it we were like, 'Man, that is a song that we're gonna cut.'"
Taylor herself also admitted to writing the single, sharing the following photo on Instagram in promotion of the track and saying via caption:
"Feeling really honored that a band I've loved for so many years decided to record this song I wrote. Good luck at #cmaawards @littlebigtown !! Love you guys."
So... okay. Taylor Swift wrote "Better Man."
Got it. Check.
But who did Swift write the song about?!? That's all anyone on the Internet is asking at the moment.
Swift dated both Calvin Harris and Tom Hiddleston in 2016.
She allegedly dumped the DJ over the phone and then got into a beef with him over her role in writing and producing his smash hit "This is What You Came For."
Conversely, she supposedly broke up with Hiddleston simply because the relationship was moving too quickly and they disagreed much they should flaunt the romance in public.
Heck, there's even been talk that Swift and Hiddleston are back together.
So she and Tom appear to be on good terms. She and Calvin? Not so much.
You can watch the video above and listen to the song in order to help form an opinion on this issue.
You can even read the lyrics to "Better Man" below:
I know I’m probably better off on my own/Than lovin’ a man who didn’t know/What he had when he had it.
And I see the permanent damage you did to me/Never again, I just wish I could forget when it was magic.
I wish it wasn’t 4am, standing in the mirror/Saying to myself, you know you had to do it/I know the bravest thing I ever did was run.
Sometimes, in the middle of the night, I can feel you again/But I just miss you, and I just wish you were a better man.
And I know why we had to say goodbye/Like the back of my hand.
And I just miss you, and I just wish you were a better man/A better man.
What do you think, readers? Any hints you can decipher?
Little Big Town's Karen, meanwhile, says everyone should really just relax.
It is possible that Swift did not have a specific person in mind when she wrote this song.
"Everybody has a better man," Karen says.
"It might have been a lover, or a parent that disappointed you. I think the beauty of that storytelling is that we can all relate to being disappointed in someone and still loving them, but saying ‘Enough is enough.'
This would have been amazing if you would have gotten your act together. That's kind of a fun song to sing."
Sure, maybe. Possibly.
But this is more likely: Swift wrong the song about Harris.
