Taylor Swift Talks Death Threats, Stalker Fans in Dark Interview

As anyone who's listened to Taylor Swift's "Welcome to New York" knows, the former breakup balladeer is rocking a more upbeat, poppy sound these days, but that doesn't mean all is bright and sunny in Swifty Land.

Taylor Swift With Her Kitty

Taylor sat down for an interview with Esquire recently and she unexpectedly opened up about the dark (and occasionally scary) side of having millions of adoring fans.

"I fought the idea of having security for a very long time, because I really value normalcy," Swift says. "I like being able to take a drive by myself. Haven't done that in six years."

"They have to be in a car behind me. Because just the sheer number of men we have in a file who have showed at my house, showed up at my mom's house, threatened to either kill me, kidnap me, or marry me."

Needless to say, there's a terrifying side to being one of the world's most popular artists. Too bad she can't just give these creeps the old, "No, it's Becky," excuse and be on her way.

"This is the strange, sad part of my life that I try not to think about," Taylor added. "I try to be lighthearted about it, because I don't want to be scared."

Suddenly we have a new appreciation for why Taylor named her cat Olivia Benson.  Who could be afraid when you have NYC's most badass crimefighter purring at your feet?

It's no secret that Taylor Swift loves cats. Her two feline friends (Meredith and Olivia Benson) are often featured front and center on her Instagram page and the singer has even been known to take Olivia for walks around NYC.

So perhaps we shouldn't be surprised by the awesomeness of Taylor's airline apparel:

Taylor Swift Cat Robe

Yes, that's Taylor in a robe that's covered in cats. What may be even more awesome than the garment itself is Ms. Swift's caption:

"This is a good example of what I typically wear on planes," Taylor wrote. "In front of lots of other people who all have eyes."

Amazing. We didn't think it could get any better than the Taylor-and-cats Diet Coke commercial, but she's somehow stepped her kitty game up even higher.

Early in her career, of course, Taylor gained a reputation as a serial monogamist, but these days she admittedly prefers hanging at home with Meredith and Olivia to dating.

"I have two cats. I'm fine!" Taylor replied recently when asked if the single life ever gets lonely.

That may be true, but if she keeps making dope fashion statements like this in public, we're guessing she'll find herself in the company of a like-minded, feline-friendly dude in the near future.

Check out some of Taylor's most cat-tastic moments in the gallery below:

Taylor Swift Unveils Complete Album Track List

So... is it October 27 yet?

A few days prior to the release of her new studio album, Taylor Swift has taken to Instagram and pulled back the curtain on the CD’s entire track list.

Taylor Swift Track List

The 24-year old sensation announced her first all-pop album in August with the lead single “Shake It Off” and its accompanying music video. Both became enormous successes.

Since then, Taylor has come out with another relationship anthem (about Harry Styles?) titled "Out of the Woods," along with her ode to The Big Apple, "Welcome to New York."

As you can see above, the latter will be the first single heard on "1989."

Fans can pre-order the new album on iTunes right now and then listen to it the moment the clock strikes midnight on Monday, October 27.

In anticipation and in promotion, Swift has been making the media rounds of late.

She's appeared on talk show and given magazine interviews and lashed out at those sexist critics who come down on her for writing about failed attempts at love.

She's also held private listening parties at her NYC apartment because Taylor Swift is totally cool and awesome and we love her. We can't wait for the new album.

Taylor Swift Hasn't Dated in HOW Long?!

$

Taylor Swift is almost as famous for her relationship history as for cranking out musical hits, but says it's quite a while since she had one of the former.

In an interview with The Sun (UK), Taylor says she hasn't dated a man in ...

Jake Gyllenhaal
Jake Gyllenhaal allegedly took Taylor Swift's v-card, then dumped her via text. TEXT.

... EIGHTEEN MONTHS! Yes, it's been a full year and a half!

"I get stressed when I think about getting into a relationship because I get beat up in the press whenever I go near a boy," said the perennial chart-topper.

"So you can understand why I'm taking a bit of a break."

Swift adds, "a relationship is not in my brain right now."

The list of boyfriends of Taylor Swift is the stuff of legend. Harry Styles, Joe Jonas, John Mayer, Taylor Lautner and Jake Gyllenhaal, to name a few.

Still, she says too much is made of her romantic life.

"It's been seen as a scandal when I date a boy yet dating people is a normal thing for a twenty-something to do ... it's treated as if I have some sort of problem."

Insisting that it would take "someone pretty damn special" to lure her away from the single life, the "Shake It Off" singer is loving life these days she says.

"Staying single has been the best thing I have done. I'm not wary of getting into another relationship. I'm just protective of my independence and freedom"

"More protective than I have been before."

"I always thought, 'What could be better than to love someone and be loved back?' I finally found what it is to love yourself and not need anyone to love you back."

Taylor, who has been known to write songs about exes, is busy promoting her new 13-track album 1989, her first studio effort since 2012's smash Red.

During a recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she performed album track Out of the Woods, which is widely believed to be about Harry Styles.

She hasn't named names, but ...

Bring It On
What do you have to say about cheerleaders NOW, Taylor?

"This song is about the fragility and breakable nature of some relationships ... a relationship where you never feel like you’re standing on solid ground."

"That kind of a feeling brings on excitement," the soon-to-be 25-year-old mused, "but also extreme anxiety and kind of a frantic feeling of wondering."

Sounds about right.

Taylor Swift Reveals Her Greatest Fears on Ellen: I Wouldn't Survive in Prison!

Taylor Swift has been making the media rounds to promote her new album 1989 this week, and her interviews have contained some surprising revelations.

Earlier today, for example, we learned that Taylor hasn't dated anyone in 18 months.

Yes, she was once as famous for her love life as she was for her music, but these days, Taylor values time with her cats over the search for Mr. Right.

But even that news isn't as surprising as the deep, dark fears that Taylor revealed during a recent interview with Ellen DeGeneres.

For one thing, Taylor has a crippling fear of sea urchins. From the sound of it, she hates everything about the spiny ocean dwellers, and she thinks you should too:

"If you knew what sea urchins were, you would be terrified," Taylor tells the talk show audience. "They're like a grenade. They're sitting there waiting to completely injure you."

Fortunately, she lives in Manhattan these days and is unlikely to step on any sea urchins while strutting around the Upper East Side in a pair of heels.

Taylor Swift: Hot in NYC
Taylor looked better than ever as she stepped out in Manhattan today. NYC seems to agree with her!

However, Taylor's other main phobia could strike at any time:

"I'm scared of getting framed," Taylor says. "So many people would frame me. And they could frame you for any crime that you could go to jail for. Look at me, I wouldn't survive in jail!"

While Taylor's fear of a reverse Gone Girl may sound ridiculous and she's clearly half-joking, there's a real-world component to her paranoia:

"I think it comes from the fact that I could look at my phone and see any headline written about me at any time," Swift says. "And it could be the most ridiculous, untrue thing."

"So I think that's where the dream and the nightmare of being framed comes from...You take it a step further and in a nightmare world, it's being framed for murder."

Earlier this week, Taylor talked about death threats from "fans," and her need for round-the-clock security, so while she jests about losing her freedom as a result of her fame, it's not hard to see how such a fear could take root.

Ever the optimist, of course, Ellen points out the upside to having millions of obsessed fans: "I think you would even have fans in prison and they would take care of you," Ellen says.

Very true. We're sure even in prison, Taylor would manage could skate through in charm.

Taylor Swift on Love: It's Torture!

Taylor Swift's fifth studio album 1989 finally drops this week, and the country-turned-pop songstress is still giving revealing interviews, as her promotional tour comes to a close.

Last week, Taylor revealed that she hasn't dated in 18 months

Today, she gave us a little insight as to why she prefers to spend time at home with her cats:

Taylor Swift and Olivia Benson
Taylor and the newest addition to her cat family. Olivia is named for Mariska Hargitay's character on Law & Order: SVU.

"I get beat up in the press whenever I go near a boy," Taylor told London's Daily Mail.

"So you can understand why I'm taking a bit of a break...It's seen as a scandal when I date a boy, and yet dating is a normal thing for a twentysomething to do."

You may have noticed that Taylor frequently uses the word "boy" when discussing her past relationships. Turns out, that's no accident.

Like her previous albums, 1989 contains plenty of veiled references to her exes. For example, it's been widely assumed that "Out of the Woods" is about Harry Styles, whom Taylor dated briefly in ...

One lyric that's caught fans' attention is the line, "Boys only want love when it's torture." Taylor claims that strange desire is one of the main things that separated boys from men.

"Boys only want love if it's torture and a constant chase," Taylor says. "Men want love if it's real, right, healthy and consistent...The male species has divided into two groups - it's boys and men."

"You can have a 40 year old boy, and 20 year old man."

Sounds like Taylor's really figured out what she wants in a relationship. Although, she's gotta admit, if it weren't for all those "boys," she may never have written some of her best songs.

Taylor Swift: PISSED About Katy Perry Super Bowl Performance?!

Get ready: it looks like the legendary Taylor Swift-Katy Perry feud might be heating up again.

It all started last month when Taylor dissed Katy in "Bad Blood," a song from her forthcoming album, 1989.

  • Katy Perry Red Carpet Image
  • Taylor Swift on NBC's The Voice

From there, things escalated quickly, with rumors that Katy and Rihanna had teamed up against Taylor and were planning to, like, totally not sit with her at lunch, or something.

But while the feud has mainly consisted of petty, passive-aggressive jabs thus far, Taylor is now rumored to be going nuclear by sabotaging plans for Katy's Super Bowl performance.

Insiders say that Katy has hired famed production designer and tour manager Baz Halpin to plan her halftime spectacular.

Baz had previously designed the stage show for Taylor's recent Red tour, and Swift has reportedly informed him that if he continues to work with Katy on her Super Bowl performance, then she'll never hire him again.

"She got word of Baz agreeing to do the show for Katy," a source tells Radar Online. "Taylor flat out said she will not hire him again for any performance or tour if he goes ahead with his decision."

"Katy got word of Taylor's ultimatum and finds it quite amusing."

So it now it seems Halpin is stuck in the middle and forced to decide between Katy and Taylor. And we thought John Mayer would be the only one to ever find himself in that position.

Katy Perry vs. Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift wrote a song titled "Bad Blood" about an enemy in the music business. We're pretty sure the subject was Katy Perry.

In case you have somehow not heard, Taylor Swift's new album is now available to download.

And while fans rush over to iTunes (is there any doubt "1989" is poised to break every conceivable record?), many celebrities have already listened to Swift's new record and have gone online to offer up their VERY positive assessment of it.

Leading the way, of course, is Taylor's bestie, Selena Gomez.

Selena and Taylor Collage

The occasional Justin Bieber girlfriend posted the above collage of her and Swift on Instagram today, along with a heartfelt message for her close friend.

"From hotel room album listening parties, kitchen dance floor album listening parties to driving on the pch, windows down album listening parties. -The best part is we were the only ones there," Selena wrote, adding:

"Each time. So happy, honored and proud to know you and your diaries. @taylorswift #1989 BUY IT!!! -now I'll listen live from drowning in my bed sheets."

Here's a rundown of what many others have Tweeted about Swift's new album:

Lena Dunham: My favorite songs on #1989 are This Love, Blank Space, Out of the Woods and also every single song.

Ed Sheeran: Go grab yourself @taylorswift13's new album, it just came out and it's stellar.

The Voice Season 7 Episode 11 Recap: Taylor Swift Said Knock You Out!

$

0

The Blind Auditions are over. The Battles have come and gone. The Knockout Round is here on The Voice, and there is no longer any margin for error.

It's win or go home. Or at least win or get stolen or go home.

With Taylor Swift on board as mentor, let's break down all the Knockout performances from last night and see who is still in the hunt to be named The Voice:

Voice Season 7 Coaches

DaNica Shirey vs. Katriz Trinidad (Team Pharrell)

DaNica Shirey (“Saving All My Love For You” by Whitney Houston) defeated Katriz Trinidad (“Superwoman” by Alicia Keys) in a little bit of an upset.

Both were terrific out there, and have potential to make it far in this competition. But only one spot remained in the Top 12, and DaNica edged Katriz for it.

Damien vs. Toia Jones (Team Adam)

It was a tough one for Adam, but Damien (“How Do I Live” by LeAnn Rimes) bested Toia Jones (“Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé) in another upset Monday.

Toia seemed to have Damien on the ropes in this Knockout round performance, pouring every ounce of energy she had into that cover, but alas, Damien it is.

Jessie Pitts vs Tanner Linford (Team Blake)

It felt like a battle of Team Blake also-rans, but Jessie Pitts (“Your Song” by Elton John) topped Tanner Linford (“Calling All Angels” by Train) to advance.

James David Carter vs. Griffin (Team Blake)

James David Carter (“You’ve Got a Friend” by James Taylor) ousted Griffin (“As Long as You Love Me” by Justin Bieber) but will have to dig deeper now.

Bryana Salaz vs. Sugar Jones (Team Gwen)

Bryana Salaz (“Heart Attack” by Demi Lovato) beat Sugar Jones (“Love on Top” by Beyoncé) even though both showed terrific technique and plenty of talent.

Sugar was stolen by Pharrell, so both move on!

Whether either can actually win is very much in doubt, but they could have a chance to make it to the top five or six with the right songs and menthoring.

Luke Wade vs. Taylor Phelan (Team Pharrell)

To the surprise of no one, Luke Wade (“Rich Girl” by Hall & Oates) prevailed over Taylor Phelan (“Rather Be” by Clean Bandit), but Taylor was stolen by Adam!

Pharrell must have played this one strategically (albeit bizarrely), putting his two strongest team members against each other knowing he'd lose one.

Both showed vulnerability, actually, but still have the chops to go all the way, or at least close to it, when the dust settles and the live playoffs begin.

Which was your favorite Knockout round?

Taylor Swift: Photobombed By Dad at 1989 Release Party!

Whether she's hosting listening parties for fans or guest-coaching on The Voice, Taylor Swift has been promoting her new album, 1989, non-stop.

It's likely to pay off in record-breaking sales, but just because Taylor is arguably the biggest pop star on the planet right now, that doesn't mean she's immune to the occasional embarrassing dad moment.

Taylor Swift: Dad Photobomb

That's Taylor at a Target location celebrating the release of the deluxe edition of 1989, and from the looks of it - no one is more excited about the record hitting stores than her proud papa.

"Hiiii dad," Swifty captioned the above pic, demonstrating once again how to turn a potentially awkward moment into a relatable and hilarious one.

Yes, as anyone who's seen Taylor's feline robe knows, the girl is successfully making cat-lady girl geek cool again. She's like a living, breathing Cathy cartoon.

And it's for that reason - as much as her catchy tunes and confessional lyrics - that Taylor has such an easy time finding an audience with all age groups and sexes. The world has enough cool celebrities. We need one covered in cat hair.

So congrats to Mr. and Mrs. Swift for raising such a daughter who's savvy and wildly talented, but more importantly, a daughter who's funny and down-to-earth enough to see that she got photobombed by her dad and throw that joint up on Instagram anyway.

Check out some celebrity reviews of Taylor's new album here and, of course, download 1989 to form your own opinion of Swifty's first foray into the world of pop.

Taylor Swift Album on Pace to Set 2014 Sales Record

$

This just in: people really like Taylor Swift.

As if the gushing reviews for her new album didn't make that clear enough, consider the early sales figures:

It is already on pace, after barely one day of release, to move 1,000,000 copies in a week.

Taylor Swift Performs in Hollywood

This would make "1989" just the 19th record to EVER sell one million copies in seven days since Nielsen SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991.

It would also make the album the first in 2014 to do so, while making Swift the first singer to have three separate million-selling weeks.

In 2010, “Speak Now” moved 1.05 million copies and “Red” then sold 1.21 million two years later.

If “1989” crossed the one million plateau, Swift will notch the biggest sales week for an album since… her very own “Red” in 2012.

So clearly Swift being absolutely EVERYwhere these days - from closing down Hollywood Boulevard to perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live... to appearing on The Voice last night - hasn't made folks sick and/or tired of Taylor Swift.

Quite the opposite, in fact. It's merely helped proved one very simply fact:

This is Taylor Swift's universe. The rest of us are merely existing within it.

Happy belated National Cat Day, pet lovers!

While this holiday took place on October 29, it's never too late to post a few pictures of adorable kittens, is it? Especially when those adorable kittens are being cradled by some of the biggest names in Hollywood?

That's what we thought.

Ian Somerhalder
Ian Somerhalder loves ALL animals. But you'll rarely find him at home without a cat in his arms.

Celebrities who adore their cats run the gamut, from rappers to Glee stars to those who portray members of the undead on The Vampire Diaries.

Not to mention Taylor Swift, of course, the most famous cat lover of them all. She and Olivia Benson have been given their very own photo gallery, after all.

Miley's ex-boyfriend also has a kitty. As does Zac Efron, Rita Ora and Katy Perry, the latter of whom easily has the best cat name in all of Hollywood.

Taylor Swift Teases "1989" Tour, Performs on Good Morning America

Taylor Swift is on pace to sell over one million copies of her new album.

But while the artist looks ahead to that milestone, she can take pride in one she accomplished this morning:

According to Robin Roberts, Swift's concert in Times Square today was the biggest ever held by Good Morning America, with countless fans camping out over night just to ensure themselves of a spot in the audience.

Aside from hearing live versions of "Shake it Off,” “Welcome to New York,” and “Out of the Woods," viewers were treated to an exciting announcement fro the 24-year old superstar.

"I am gonna be going out on tour very soon!" she exclaimed. "We’re in the early stages of planning the actual show. I’m excited about announcing things when I can announce them, but it’s going to be happening."

The tour, of course, will feature new material from the album "1989."

Swift has been everywhere in promotion of her new music.

She closed down Hollywood Boulevard for a concert on Jimmy Kimmel Live. She is covering numerous magazines. She even appeared on The Voice this week.

Taylor Swift overload? It doesn't appear that way. The singer is more popular than ever before.

Taylor Swift: Not Lonely, Not Looking, Sick of Sexism

$
0
0

Taylor Swift is making headlines these days for her professional life, not her personal life.

The artist is blowing up the charts with her new album, teasing an upcoming tour and pretty much taking over all entertainment outlets around the globe.

And she's doing it all without a man by her side.

Taylor Swift on British Cosmopolitan
Taylor Swift covers this issue of British Cosmopolitan. Inside, she talks to the magazine about dating, sexism and a lot more.

"People will say, let me set you up with someone, and I'm just sitting there saying, ‘That's not what I'm doing. I'm not lonely; I'm not looking.'...They just don't get it," the 24-year-old tells the December issue of British Cosmopolitan.

As Swift has said before, she has two cats at home and that's all she needs right now.

"I've [learned] that just because someone is cute and wants to date you, that's not a reason to sacrifice your independence and allow everyone to say whatever they want about you," Taylor explains. "I'm not doing that anymore."

Swift's famous exes, of course, run the gamut from Harry Styles to John Mayer to Jake Gyllenhaal to Taylor Lautner.

But those relationships have also been spread out over a long period of time. And they've caused Swift to take note of how she's viewed by the world.

"My girlfriends and I talk a lot about feminism and the inequality between the way men and women are talked about. The kind of things we say are, ‘Why is it mischievous, fun and sexy if a guy has a string of lovers that he's cast aside; loved and left? Yet if a woman dates three or four people in an eight-year period she is a serial dater and it gives some 12-year-old the idea to call her a ‘slut' on the internet?'

"It's not the same for boys, it just isn't and that's a fact."

Anyone care to argue with that? We didn't think so.

Therefore, Swift will keep making music and making herself happy by just chilling with pals such as Selena Gomez and putting her love life on the back burner for awhile.

"It'd take someone really special for me to undergo the circumstances I have to go through to experience a date," she says. "I don't know how I would ever have another person in my world trying to have a relationship with me, or a family.

"The best answer I can come up with now is ‘go at it alone.' Life can be romantic without having a romance. I'm very attracted to how happy I am now."

Now there's an attitude worthy of some celebratory dancing!

15 Stars Who Once Modeled For Abercrombie & Fitch (You Won't Believe #7)

$

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away (or at least it seems like it), a number of Hollywood A-listers used to model clothes for Abercrombie & Fitch.

Some of these young men and women look like they were designed to wear the famous brand, while others who once modeled it will likely surprise you.

Especially #7. We did not see that one coming one bit ...

Jennifer Lawrence
Oh yes, that's a young Jennifer Lawrence, the most beautiful Abercrombie model (or possibly human being) of all time.

It's hard to believe that before she was winning Oscars, posing for magazine covers, and ruling Hollywood, a young Jennifer Lawrence was doing this.

And yet at the same time, it's not. Just look at her.

She was just about the most naturally beautiful human being to ever exist on the planet, and she still is. Channing Tatum modeling for Abercrombie?

Similarly believable and as epic as you would think.

Shot by Bruce Weber, the fashion brand has employed a who's-who of talent on the rise and future stars over the years, with seemingly no end in sight.

A 2014 campaign includes Steven R. McQueen, familiar if you watch The Vampire Diaries online, Arrow's Colton Haynes, and Revenge's Christa B. Allen.

Check out the gallery above and marvel at the careers some of these models went on to achieve, and just how far A&F has fallen since its iconic heyday.

Seriously. Abercrombie is the worst company ever, more or less, based on any number of news reports and anecdotes to hit the web in recent years.

J-Law wouldn't model for them now, we'd guess.

Taylor Swift-Spotify Feud: What's the Deal?

If you're a Taylor Swift fan who uses the music streaming service Spotify, you may have found yourself disappointed this week.

As you've likely heard, Taylor released 1989 on Monday and her highly-anticipated fifth studio album is on track to become the biggest seller of the year.

Taylor Swift With Her Kitty

Swift's label, Big Machine Records, pulled all of her music from Spotify in preparation for 1989's blockbuster sales.

Spotify execs issued a statement saying that they're fans of Taylor's music and "hope that she changes her mind."

That seems unlikely.

With a 1989 world tour coming up and promotional tie-ins with companies like Target and Coca-Cola, Taylor has been promoting 1989 harder than any of her previous albums.

It seems clear that she considers the album to be some of her best work, and her fans seem to agree. So why not have them pay full price for it?

Taylor's been open about her feelings on online streaming services in the past:

"Piracy, file sharing and streaming have shrunk the numbers of paid album sales drastically," she told the Wall Street Journal last year. "Every artist has handled this blow differently."

Taylor certainly isn't the first artist to pull her music from Spotify. Beyonce and Coldplay are two of the growing number of major acts who have already cut ties with the service.

Taylor Swift may have just released the pop record of the year, but while other celebrities are gushing over Taylor's new album, Swifty's own musical tastes veer a little bit more hardcore.

That's Taylor lip-syncing to Kendrick Lamar's "Backseat Freestyle" and we think it's safe to say the lyrical content is a bit outside of her wheelhouse.

"My mind is on cloud nine, and this .9 is never on vacation," Taylor begins.

The first part is probably true, considering she just sold over a million copies and announced the 1989 world tour, but we have our doubts about Taylor carrying a cat in one hand a loaded piece in the other.

But even with Taylor spittin' lines about busting caps, the most interesting thing about this video is where it ends:

"Poppin' pills in the lobby," Taylor raps as the video cuts off before the line, "And I pray they don't find her naked."

Given that Taylor has declared herself a "true feminist," it's not surprising that she chose to cut the line that seems to be about a dead prostitute.

Plus, Taylor's biggest fear is being framed for murder, so she can't go around videotaping her own false confessions.

Obviously, Taylor is just having fun with a great song, but if she wants to rap on Instagram, next time we'd recommend something a bit more feminist friendly for the sake of her public image.

Might we suggest Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" complete with twerking?

All this week, Taylor Swift has been celebrating the success of her latest album and making the Internet a better place in the process.

Yesterday Taylor rapped a Kendrick Lamar song to celebrate 1989's record-breaking sales.

Today, she showed just how long she's been down with the streets when she posted what might be the ultimate Throwback Thursday photo:

Taylor Swift Yearbook Photo

"The last time an album sold as many copies as 1989 did first week, it was 2002," Taylor wrote with the awesome photo above.

"I was 12, and going through my "braids phase." #nofilternecessary"

By the way, the artist who set the pace back in 2002? Eminem - another genre-redefining blonde who's arguably too open about his personal life. Coincidence? Yeah, probably.

But just because she's got the top-selling album of 2014 (by far!) don't expect Taylor to rest on her laurels.

She's already announced the ambitions 1989 World Tour, and seems like you can't turn on a TV without seeing Swifty promoting the album.

Early estimates have Taylor becoming the top-earning female entertainer of the year and she's only 24.

When you're that successful, you can post a photo of yourself in some truly tragic cornrows and still retain 100% of your swag.

Taylor Swift Slams Spotify: I Ain't Giving It Away For Free!

The so-called "feud" between Taylor Swift and Spotify isn't really a feud at all, but rather the result of a savvy business decision on Taylor's part.

Spotify compensates artists, but streaming doesn't pay nearly as well as actual sales, so it's not hard to see why Taylor would prefer for her fans to go to iTunes or Target if they want to hear her blockbuster album:

Taylor Swift on NBC's The Voice

"I'm not willing to contribute my life's work to an experiment that I don't feel fairly compensates the writers, producers, artists, and creators of this music," Taylor said in a recent interview.

"I just don't agree with perpetuating the perception that music has no value and should be free."

But isn't 1989 the best-selling album of the year? Isn't Taylor on track to become the highest-paid female entertainer of 2014. Does she really need the money that comes from album sales when she has tours, endorsements and a million other revenue streams?

Well, it turns out there's more to the decision to pull her music from Spotify than just money:

Streaming services put the emphasis on individual songs rather than albums, and it seems Taylor believes 1989 works best as a cohesive whole:

"I'd really much rather write a novel than a bunch of short stories," she says. "I'd rather be known for a collection of songs that go together and live together and belong together."

And since Taylor's intense love for her fans sets her apart from most artists as much as her talent and business acumen, her millions of devotees naturally entered into her decision as well:

"I felt like [with Spotify] I was saying to my fans, 'If you dreate music someday, if you create a painting someday, someone can just walk into a museum, take it off the wall, rip off a corner of it, and it's theirs now and they don't have to pay for it.'"

Yes, though it resulted in some minor backlash, Taylor's decision to pull her work from streaming services was actually another carefully considered step in one of the most skillfully navigated careers in music history.

The girl is good.

She's Never Been in Love!
Yes, the woman who's as famous for her dating life as for her music says that when she looks back on her relationships, she realizes none of them were "real love."
